So I made way to Best Buy yesterday and bought a copy Windows Vista Ultimate. I asked for the Signature Edition and got it- good deal since it was the same price ($259). Freebies included in the deal were 512 Megs of Kingston DDR memory (I got the notebook one), Taxcut Premium, and LiveOne Care (they were out of stock so gave me a raincheck). I also bought the D-Link DIR-625 Rangebooster N Router for $30 (a $50 savings from the regular price)- haven't even opened it. My current plan is to use it as a router only and disable its wireless since I'm already using the Belkin Pre-N router as a wireless gateway. My current router is the Buffalo WHR-G54s flashed w/ DD-WRT. I'm actually pretty happy with it but figure I could move it to another room to work as a wireless bridge. We'll see. Anyways back to the upgrade.
First I needed to open the case. I must be an idiot because I thought it opens like a book, so I kept yanking until the bottom plastic peg became partly dislodged. Apparently the innards of the case rotates out to the right, with the bottom right corner as the spoke. Oops.
I have a HP Pavilion DV9000t notebook with the XB3000 dock. Windows XP Media Center was preinstalled. Before the upgrade I made sure to back up my drive via Acronis True Image to a desktop PC. Then I had to decide whether to install the 32 bit Vista Ultimate or the 64 bit. After some research I decided to go with the 64 bit since it apparently offered better performance & security. I was okay at that point with possibly not having the latest/greatest drivers and not being able to run 16-bit apps.
So I popped in the Vista Ultimate 64 bit upgrade DVD and an error message popped up saying I couldn't install while still in Windows- I image that's because my Windows XP is 32 bits. So I was like- okay let's do it- rebooted the computer and booted up the DVD. The installer grayed out the "upgrade" method, saying that I would have to run the installer within the existing version of Windows (which didn't work for me). So since I had my entire drive backed up I went ahead and pick the option where it would do a clean install and move my old Windows into another folder.
The install took well over an hour- perhaps a big reason was that my hard drive is only 5400 RPM. Once it was done I noticed the video was pretty low res (800x600), but admirably Vista went and automatically downloaded new 64 bit drivers for the built-in GeForce 7600 card. In fact it pretty much found all the drivers- the Conexant HD audio, the modem, the network card, the built-in wireless, etc. The audio mixer was spartan- it only had a single master volume control- no separate controls for wav, midi, etc. But that wasn't a big deal at all for me. It could not, however, find the drivers for my Samsung SCX4100 AIO printer, which was a bummer.
I have to admit I was a little lost with the new interface since I never played with any of the Vista betas. On the desktop there was only a single icon- the Recycle Bin. Gone were the familiar My Computer, Network Places, and My Documents. To navigate your hard drive you're now supposed to click on the new round Windows "start" button, then select "Computer". Interestingly the new "explorer" doesn't seem to have a name, and looks a little like the file browser my sister uses on her Mac OS X notebook.
There was a new bar with gadgets on the right side of the screen. To my dismay, however, you can't seem to resize the gadgets- or at least the two I was interested in- the stock gadget & the rss gadget. You have to hit a button to expand or scroll up the and down to view the list of data. I turned off the gadgets and installed Google Desktop w/ the sidebar instead.
I noticed a lot of cool new features- taskbar window previews, built-in ability to fix photos, a neat network mapper, and the performance gauge. Also I was eager to try some of the Ultimate Extras features. Going to Windows Update Vista fetched a Texas Hold'em Game- looked pretty decent but I didn't play around with it much. I wanted to try out Dreamscene (the feature in Ultimate where it lets you use a .mpg or a .wmv file as background), but didn't find it anywhere. Perhaps it'll be available later on Windows Update.
Now it came to upgrading/installing the apps. There was not 64 bit version of Firefox 2.0, but I installed the regular 32 bit version and it worked fine. 32 bit apps have a designated "*32" appened at the end of the app name when you view the task manager. The same was with Thunderbird (1.5.0.9), the email client I use. The one quirk I noticed with these Firefox & Thunderbird was that they can't be made the default browser and email client, respectively. Apparently Mozilla knows about the bug and is working on it.
Then came the show stopper for me- I could not get Microsoft (yes "Microsoft") Small Business Accounting 2006 to work. During the install Vista gave warnings that there are known issues w/ the app under the new OS, but I forced it to install anyways. Even though I had concerns about data import I thought maybe I'll try out the 2007 version so I downloaded the trial. version. Before installing I tried uninstall the "Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MICROSOFTSMLBIZ)" that was added by SBA 2006 but it just won't go away. It looks like it's removing it but in the end it stays on the list.
Another annoying problem was that after waking from sleep a lot of times my secondary monitor (connected to the xb3000 dock) became the primary monitor, and I would have to go in and manually change it back. What's even worse right now for some reason Vista can't even turn on my laptop LCD screen (the main monitor). It's most likely an Nvidia driver issue.
I am going to revert back to Windows XP for now. As a tech enthusiast I supposed I was overzealous in upgrading to Vista right away. At this point I do not recommend upgrading unless you are prepared to deal with driver issues and app issues. If you do you might want to go with the 32 bit version to avoid some of the driver problems. I will go back to Vista for sure, but probably not for another 6 months or so until more 64 bit drivers are available and some of the app issues are ironed out.
Unfortunately the Acronis True Image 8.0 rescue CD didn't come with the network drivers for the laptop/dock. So I am going to have to resort to copying the image to a USB HDD and then connecting it to the notebook to do the restore.
That is it for now- hasta la Vista ;-).

I just got an HP dv9000 that already came with Vista. Had the same issues with the Gadget bar, why can't we resize the darn thing ? Well since my laptop screen is 17 inch wide I could live with some large gadget icons but still...
Drivers are still a problem, 3 months after your post. My HP came with a webacm but no drivers. And the Sound card driver is - as you noticed - spartan. Worse, it doesn't let you select the input lines or output lines so all I record comes with mic sound mixed in. I tried to disable the mic and it simply disabled all recording devices, including the webcam!!!!
I wish I could say hasta la Vista but since it came factory installed I think I'll have to live with it. Good thing I also have a desktop with XP!
Renmiri- here's the 32 bit Vista Webcam driver- I can't try it because I have 64bit but it should work for you:

I also have the DV9000T 64Bit with Vista Ultimate.
I actually love it. I too love the Gadget bar.. but I can't resize it either!
I've run into the same problems with Software and drivers. but one thing that has helped me is Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007. So I have a working copy of Windows XP Pro on my Vista 64bit Laptop. It runs great and it gets assigned its own IP address emulating the Hosts Network cards (LAN & Wireless).
But I have a problem maybe you can help me with.. I too am useing the XB3000 Expansion Base. Using a Dual Monitor setup.. When I have the exterenal Montior plugged into the Expansion Base it Flickers like crazy when I'm doing anything in the Laptop LCD but when I plug it into the Laptops VGA port .. It works perfect with no Ficker.. I'm using the LCD Samsung SyncMaster 204T as my second monitor. Any Ideas? Begining to think my XB3000 is faulty..
Thanks
Rex
Hmmm that's really odd how the 2nd monitor would flicker like that. It seems like the monitor is not syncing up when it's plugged into the XB3000. If you happen to have another monitor to attach to the XB3000 to test that would help determine if the base is faulty. If it works fine with another monitor then it probably means the base is okay, and it's some sort of weird incompatibility issue with the 204T. If that's the case maybe there are some settings you can play around with on the 204T that might help.
Hi, I have a HP dv2000t notebook, the xb3000 expansion base, and also a second monitor which is a Samsung Sychmaster 206BW LCD.
I'm having the same issues with monitor flicker when connecting the second monitor into the Xb3000 expansion base. I find that when you connect the second monitor directly into the VGA port of the laptop there is no flicker, but then the laptop can't be docked at the same time because both the VGA cable and the power adapter of the expansion base won't fit together.
Then my husband and I thought we found a solution by cutting of the screw-in pins of the VGA cable so that I could plug my second monitor directly into the laptop AND have it docked at the same time but no! Once the laptop is docked, the VGA port is disabled! So I guess I have to deal with the monitor flicker which absolutely sucks.
It's very disappointing, I've called HP support and they said there is nothing they can do about it.
Try putting your OS into power save mode. No kidding. It reduced my flicker by 90%. This is a joint OS and NVIDIA issue I fear.
When I unplug my power, everything works fine which led me to test this theory...
I am having the same problem with my HP and a Dell LCD monitor.
I called HP and had them replace the expansion base, but it is exactly the same problem. I should have stuck with my Dell laptop.
Same problem for me with expension, I have the quickdock. I found a monitor which for some weird reason doesn't cause this issue...
But just got a new samsung syncmaster and problem with it too
I even exchange the dock and still causing problem :(
Did you download the Samsung Syncmaster drivers from their website? You may be able to adjust the frequency to stop it flickering.
Make sure its at 60Hz - the 75 Hz is not supported at 1900x1200 resolution if your screen is big.
Also your Graphics board vendor may have drivers to support multiple monitors and fiddle with the frequencies.
HP is excellent at specifying the motherboard, onboard graphic chips, etc if you are using the onboard graphics at all on their website.
How to fix that confounded external monitor flicker with an xb3000 expansion dock:
1. buy a cheap (20 bucks) replacement power supply.
2. Fold your fancy expensive HP adapter up and stuff it in your laptop bag for permanent portability.
3. Use the cheap replacement adapter for the xb3000. Flicker disappears like magic! Leave the cheap adapter there and truly enjoy one-plug docking :)
Hey,
I have the dv6500t notebook with windows vista ultimate (64bit). The webcam ceases to work after few minutes when I connect in yahoo messenger. If I restart yahoo messenger, then also it won't work. But if I restart the PC, then the cam would work for few minutes and then again ceases. Any ideas to resolve the issue..
Is it a vista issue or webcam issue?
Thanks in advance for your help..

Okay, so what model is the cheap power supply (brand and vendor) to buy to plug into the docking station to end the flicker?
buy one so cheap it doesn't even have a brand one it - it just says "replacement AC adapter"
output: 18.5 V, 3.5 A
i got mine at:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110195347948
I found an even cheaper solution to the flicker problem.
After much searching I found the problem isn't necessarily with the XB3000, but with the monitor ground. I fixed it by using one of those cheap 3-prong adapters designed for older houses without a ground.
The flickering was gone instantly. I still have it plugged into a decent UPS so I'm not too worried about the lack of grounding.
The ground on the monitor did NOT dix my screen flicker. I tried cutting off the ground prong on the AC plug but it didn't do anything to help the problem.
This docking station (xb3000) is a piece of crap. What good is it do have a docking station that you can't even use an external monitor with it??
I actually just bought one of the expansion bases... setting my power scheme to battery life fixes the external flicker... BUT I am looking into the cheap power adapter..
Thanks
Awesome! I've been living with this monitor flicker problem for almost a year! I grabbed one of those three-to-two prong adapters I've had lying around and viola!! No more screen flicker! Can't thank you enough!
I just changed a VGA cable, substitute it with a really bold one instead of the one they provide with base. Flickering reduced probably 95%. It can be barely noticed only if you change background to gray.
Brilliant!!! I have the HP Quickdoc docking station and was experiencing the monitor flicker problem with my new 22 inch LCD monitor. I tried buying a DVI-VGA adapter to see if that would help at all to no avail. I was thinking about going out and buying one of those universal docking stations instead…but then I read this thread & the three-to-two prong adapter worked like a charm. Thanks so much. I may go out and purchase one of the cheap AC adapters anyway. Hmmm now it makes sense why they don’t sell it with a power supply – because it doesn’t work ;-)
This is AMAZING!!!! The 3prong to 2prong adapter worked like a charm!!! I thank you very very much!!! It works like a champ now.
I too tried the 3 to 2 prong approach and it worked like magic. Thanks to all!!
I have a QuickDock and was experiencing alot of monitor flicker. I tried a 3-prong to 2-prong adapter on the monitor plug and the flicker disappeared instantly. Thanks all for your helpful hints!
I've got to say. Its Jan 09 and I have the new DV4T with nice 21.6" Acer and latest quickdoc, and yes I expierence the same dam FLICKER! I ran across this blog and happen to have the 2 prong adapter and to my amazement IT WORKED no flicker. How the heck did you figure it out? This made no sense to me esp since plugging in the latptop direct to the monitor the flicker goes away...???
Great Fix!
Thanks you so much for this three-to-two prong adapter solution. Now my Acer travelmate 6292 with extended monitor Acer P225HQ are working fine and say good buy to flicker. Thanks
